Cultural Appropriation

Today I will be talking about cultural appropriation. Cultural appropriation is the act of adopting elements of an outside, often minority culture, including knowledge, practices, and symbols, without understanding or respecting the original culture and context. Can we truly understand when this became a thing or what would be considered cultural appropriation? From my perspective I would rather research if this began with my ethnic group. If not I would preferably understand where it originated from and respect the context. It truly depends on how you look at it. Most would look past something they were taught growing up then seeing someone of a different ethnic group acting as if they created (insert cultural appropriated topic). Now the people that respect these things could protest to get it removed from major media outlets, stores, etc. What is your perspective and/or how do you feel about this topic?

I feel this is a subject much needed for our current times. Especially since all cultures are affected. I can see wanting to learn about just one ethnic group in particular, but looking at diversity within businesses and corporations and learning what’s is appropriate can prevent a lot. I worked for the Navy for many years. I have visited many countries and learned many customs so that I didn’t start a war by disrespecting anyone. Wouldn’t you want others to learn what is appropriate behavior based on your own culture?

  2. I think everybody should respect each ethnic cultural appropriation. I do agree with you about researching different cultural appropriation and learning the symbols, cultural practices and knowing about different cultural before you make an opinion on something. Learning about your own cultural background is a start for everyone. If you are not positive about cultural appropriation you should not speak or act on it.
